Scored a Birmingham YCL-1236-GH Lathe w/ Microkinetics CNC + Extras...
No real photos (Yet) as it was a late night loading session... Still in the truck!
I got a lightly used Birmingham YCL-1236GH All the Usual's 3&4 Jaw Chucks (4 Jaw belive is a Bison?), Steady Rest Follow Rest, Etc.
Microkinetics CNC kit Steppers, Brackets, Belts Pulleys, MN400E motion controller, Power Driver, Etc.. 98% of the Kit I would say! MicroKinetics CNC Lathes 1236 and 1340 - lathe, turning, machines -
Phase Quick Change Post Bunch of tool tool Holders.. Buy 250-222 Phase II Wedge Type Quick-Change Tool Posts from UseEnco
Bonus: They tossed in a New In the box Newall B603000/2k16 3 AXIS DRO setup! Not sure what I will do with that! I don't have a Bridgeport milling machine I have A G0704 with a DRO already!
So what do I do? I think am going to build it! My fist CNC Build!
Any opinions? On the Equipment and advice on CNC conversion!
Was not hoping to land a 12X36 so i have to move every thing around to make room for it!
Thanks

Nice score. Welcome to the club.
Re: Scored a Birmingham YCL-1236-GH Lathe w/ Microkinetics CNC + Extras...
Lots to learn Lots to Learn... it has all the original stuff that came off the machine also.
Re: Scored a Birmingham YCL-1236-GH Lathe w/ Microkinetics CNC + Extras...
Looks like you can make it work with what you have right there. I see steppers and the drive.
I just figured out the Z from the pics. That is an interesting arrangement. No reason it wouldnt be fine just never seen it that way.
Re: Scored a Birmingham YCL-1236-GH Lathe w/ Microkinetics CNC + Extras...
Yea, needs cleaned and every thing aligned but should work as is.

Lots of work... The Chinese need to learn to mask surfaces off prior to painting. Note to self some casting edges have burs and are sharp!

Wiring up the MN400E to the Drive Rack we have stepper movement! Maurice with Microkinetics Tech Support got a big bonus this morning! Thanks Maurice one little issue with the MN400E but hope we can solve it in the software by changing what motor output it uses for the Z axis.
Re: Scored a Birmingham YCL-1236-GH Lathe w/ Microkinetics CNC + Extras...
Looks like you have 2 extra drives. Are you using Mach?
Re: Scored a Birmingham YCL-1236-GH Lathe w/ Microkinetics CNC + Extras...
I think I am going to go over to mach3... Just need to find a good breakout board would prefer USB but options are open.
Re: Scored a Birmingham YCL-1236-GH Lathe w/ Microkinetics CNC + Extras...
Personally I would go with the Ethernet versions before USB. The G540 or MX3660 are great all inclusive boards( though they are both PP). If you want overkill a PMDX126 and the drivers of your choice and maybe a Ethernet SS?
Re: Scored a Birmingham YCL-1236-GH Lathe w/ Microkinetics CNC + Extras...
Should have first chips this weekend. Fingers Crossed! Still awaiting the Preload Nut & Collar for the X axis ball screw! I may set up the X axis with just one ball nut to start and may make the Collar & Nut if I cannot get one soon!
Re: Scored a Birmingham YCL-1236-GH Lathe w/ Microkinetics CNC + Extras...
I wasn't sold on the Smooth stepper until my Pulsar arrived with the ethernet version installed. It makes Mach3 much more stable than it was for me. Now for the most part, Mach 3 is good. Once you have a stabiliized system installed and set, it will usually stay that way. However, sometimes noise or whatever else can cause intermittent glitches or lock ups with Mach. My previous Torus would sometimes lock up if it sat idle for awhile. Not on the Pulsar. Not even the first lockup so far.
That dependability is worth the extra cost IMO. Not only that, it doesn't limit you on what PC to use as a control, should you have a PC failure.
Looking forward to some chips. have you thought about what Cam you will use?
Re: Scored a Birmingham YCL-1236-GH Lathe w/ Microkinetics CNC + Extras...
No have not thought about CAM right now getting the machine up and running. More info on Pulsar as i am using a basic breakout just to get it moving. I will prob go with a PMDX-126!
Re: Scored a Birmingham YCL-1236-GH Lathe w/ Microkinetics CNC + Extras...
The Pulsar is a mill from Novakon. I think the PMDX is a good choice. I have almost went with it several times. ;) Drooled over it I think.

I am still going to Diagnose and Fix the Original Controller...
I have it Ready to Debug with a Jtag!

Yea, the PMDX gets a lot of good reviews.
