CNC Project !! AMA25LV (G0704) Mill !!!!!!!
Hi chaps,
Im new here but i would like to share my current build with you all. This is my new AMA25LV Manual mill that has only been used for a little while and i purchased it with the intention to convert it to CNC.
Here are some pictures of the current set up !!

Ive got the following to build the machine:
12v Power Supply
AMA25LV Machine
Nema 23 CNC Stepper Motors High Torque
Nema 34 CNC Stepper Motor High Torque
Break Out Board 5 Axis USB Control
M542 CNC Driver
M335 CNC Drivers
Tormach MT3 Spindle Adaptor
Emergency Stop Button
Multipul CNC tools ( Carbide )
Ive been designing the machine and the set up i would like. Please let me know what you think about it :)

Ive got the bracket and ball screws coming from Automation Technology at the end of the month so they will go straight on. I'll need to grind out the XY base plate to allow the all screw place.
Really looking forward to this project !!!!!!
Cheers,
Olly.

Love the solid works model care to share it?
Re: CNC Project !! AMA25LV (G0704) Mill !!!!!!!
Of corse, send me your email ;)
Re: CNC Project !! AMA25LV (G0704) Mill !!!!!!!
Thanks, Best model I have seen yet.
Re: CNC Project !! AMA25LV (G0704) Mill !!!!!!!
Thank you ;) what do you think about my setup ?
Re: CNC Project !! AMA25LV (G0704) Mill !!!!!!!
I am a design engineer ;) I use CATIA V5 at work but use SolidWorks for my own use as in that is what I initially trained in ;)

Re: CNC Project !! AMA25LV (G0704) Mill !!!!!!!
Just started stripping the machine down and cleaning it all up ;) I found that the under side of the slide ways where very stiff and in bad condition ! I had to Lap them all in to remove dents and odd issues ! I ran the DTI across the table and it was reading -0.005 mm across the full x travel. I then did the Y and got +0.012.
Some picture of the dissembles.
Now it is dissembles I shall do a better CAD model of it for you all. I may start making some custom brackets for you if you want when It is CNC'ed up !!

Please let me know if you want some more detailed pics ;)
Also does anyone know what motor couplers are required for the Nema 23 in XY and then for Z the Nema 34 ?
Cheers,
Olly

I also think I have a issue with the electrics. I have this set up:
Attachment 255308Attachment 255310Attachment 255312Attachment 255314
When I move the motors they turn way too much for the value shown. Also they sometimes stall. Not sure what to do.
Also the slide ways on the machine seen to Jam up when you try and slide them manually:

Re: CNC Project !! AMA25LV (G0704) Mill !!!!!!!
So the motor tuning is wrong. Since there is no gearing. it should be 200 steps per revolution x your microstepping value. Once you install ball screws or whatever it will be 200 x microstepping value x gear ratio. Accel and velocity will have to be adjusted to not stall.
There arent really any default settings that would work across the board. If there are, they would have to be extremely conservative just due to the different set up abilities of the user.
Re: CNC Project !! AMA25LV (G0704) Mill !!!!!!!
Where do you get the micro stepping value ? I don't have additional micro stepping drivers ?
Re: CNC Project !! AMA25LV (G0704) Mill !!!!!!!
If you look at your picture 4, it shows how the dip switches should be set to obtain different microstepping values. For example a 1.8 degree stepper has 200 steps per rotation. 200 x 1.8=360. For resonance issues you want to break the steps down into smaller increments and for improved resolution (to a degree can not make the machine accurate to .00001).
Your drivers allow full step (200) half step (400) 1/8th (1600) and 1/16th (3200). I would use the 1/8th (1600) myself first. Then in motor tuning put 1600 in the steps per box, hit apply. Now every 1600 steps will create a single revolution of the stepper.

Umm.... no. The setting in Mach3 sets the steps per unit, either per inch or per millimeter, not one motor rev. In most cases one rev of the motor will be either 0.2" or 5mm, as determined by the screw pitch. Assuming the screws are metric, with 5mm lead (5mm/turn), the number entered into the StepsPer setting in Mach3 will be one of the following:
For inch default units: StepsPerRev * 25.4 / 5
For mm default units: StepsPerRev / 5

I work in MM. Here are the specs for the ball screws :

Re: CNC Project !! AMA25LV (G0704) Mill !!!!!!!
So I would do 1600 x 5 = 8,000 steps per revs. ?? Seems a lot !!

What's velocity and acceleration ? Where do you get these figures from ?

A lot to cover about your electronics but to start, velocity would be inches per minute or mm per minute in your case, it's how far the axis would travel in 1 minute.
I would start at 600 mm/min, may be able to go faster but we'll see, you say you are using a 12v power supply, this will seriously impede performance but more on that later.
Acceleration is the time it takes to go from stopped up to the velocity speed or from that speed back down to zero, shown as the angled lines in the graph, .1 is a good accel but since your system is such a slug give it .5 seconds.
Have you figured out the steps per and driver switch settings?

Re: CNC Project !! AMA25LV (G0704) Mill !!!!!!!
No mate, thanks for your help also, you seem to be the master at this :D
I have 2 Nema 23 High torque steppers and one Nema 34.
The ball screws are the standard 5mm pitch.
I have purchased the ball screws from the same place I ordered the brackets. I assume they are made for each other. Automation technology.
M542 for the Nema 34 and the M335 for the Nema 23. I need to know the dip switch settings so it is accurate and nicely smooth :)
Cheers,
Olly

Oh no sorry I have the 24v power supply :)

Re: CNC Project !! AMA25LV (G0704) Mill !!!!!!!
24 volt is better and the m335 drivers can only handle 30 vdc but do you have the part numbers for the steppers or a link where you got them.
Most of us run at 48 volts for best performance, your M542 can handle that but not the m335.
What steppers you have determines what voltage and amperage is best to run.
Need to know the stepper amps to give you switch settings.
I'll look for the pdf for your drivers and get switch settings to give you steps/per, you are running metric correct..
