G0704 or wait till March for G0795?

I am going to be travelling across the state which will give me the opportunity to visit the Grizzly showroom in Muncy PA. Sales tax is 6 percent in PA. I have a 5 percent off coupon and without shipping costs that would bring the price of the machine down to around 1200 instead of the near 1400 it would cost shipping it to my house. Grizzly has the G0795 coming out in march. I have compiled a list of the specifications I could find on both machines. Do you guys think I should wait for the G0795?

** The G0704 ad only lists "Stand Footprint" at 15 3/4 x 16 1/2. In the picture there looks to be at least 2 inches of space between the base of the machine and the perimeter of the top of the stand on all 4 sides. I am guessing the G0704 base footprint is something like 11" x 14"

I should also add I plan on doing a belt drive and converting to CNC. This mill will be going in a second floor bedroom and will be mainly used to mill steel. We don't have a basement nor do I want it in the garage since a good 7 months out of the year it is below freezing out there and the rest of the time it is very humid. *Erie PA

Is the G0704 rigid enough for accurate steel work or should I wait for the G0795? Thanks

I see nothing that would make me even consider that machine. It's far more expensive, has a MUCH slower spindle, smaller travels. What do you get for the extra $400?

Looks like the 0795 may be a touch stiffer, but I doubt much. Doesn't look like an extra $400 buys you much especially considering that you are going to do a belt drive anyway.

I saw the 0795 in my Grizzly catalog, it looks like a mini rf45.
Rigidity would be better than the 0704 for cutting steel though the 0704 can cut steel ok.
The geared head is very rf45 like so for use as a steel cutter it would be fine, you don't need a lot of rpm for that.
Are you sure your second floor could handle the weight?
You can put down some plywood to help spread the load.
Pretty sure the PA showroom is out of stock on the g0704 too so you may have to wait anyway, seeing them side by side in person would make deciding easier.

Nice, that could be used as an enclosure with some walls and bonus top/bottom shelves for storage.

The 0795 looks OK to me as a replacement to the mid sized PM-30 or Weiss 30lv.

At lease it has a A/C motor which has to be better then the 704 brushed motor.

I will be buying one and seeing how it does.

Make sure you call ahead and check stock. I grabbed the last g0704 they had yesterday at the PA warehouse.

It would be no more load than me at 260lbs and standing on 1 size 11 foot. Not detectable unless you are measuring the deflection of the floor from underneath, with an indicator ;-)

It was just a thought as my g0704 on the stand produced a noticeable bounce when moving it around in the middle of the floor in my upstairs room, not near as noticeable now in the other room up against the wall like he plans, he should have no issues.
My size 15's however could have been the reason for the bounce with our combined weights.;)

If shelves are anything like mine you're looking at 475 odd pounds (plus shelving weight and whaetver else is on the shelf) bearing on 4 points approximately 2x2 inches. It's not so much the floor structure itself that could be a problem but rather the actual flooring material. I'd be inclined to find out which way the floor joists run and put a length of 6"x2" perpendicular to the joists. This would prevent the 4 points loads from bearing directly on the flooring material only.

Ha if we wanted to get real technical we could start discussing live vs point vs evenly distributed loads, resonance, having loads close to support points introducing hear loading, whether joist are single or continuous spans.

Enough of the chippy\frame designer.

In actual fact alot of people put water beds on floors with no consideration of the floor structure. Tho depending what is below, for example rooms\living areas it could act as a sound box. Tho I could imagine some flex in the horizontal frame supports of the shelving because that 2000 pound value they give is for an evenly distributed load, what you may find there is some sort of bouncing affect if placed in the middle of the span.
Actually I'd be more inclined to place the machine on a bench\stand where the legs are closer to the machine.

Ray, I have to disagree with you. I think the G0795 has a lot to offer verses the G0704 especially if you want to use it to cut steel. The reason the G0795 has less travel in the X axis is because the saddle is much wider than the G0704 which is going to give you a more ridged machine. The saddle is also thicker which not only makes for a stronger machine, but an easier CNC retrofit as the G0704 saddle is so thin you have to mill out a large pocket in order to fit ball screws.

The G0795 also has a stronger column and over 3" more of Z axis travel which I always seem to run out of. I also think the motor / gear box combo is going to be stronger than the G0704 and you won't have to spend the time doing a belt drive conversion to it.

* I do agree that the slower spindle speed is a negative, but should be ok for cutting steel. I wonder how hard it would be to make the spindle faster?

I was originally going to buy a g0704 to retrofit to CNC, but to me this new model looks like it may be a much more ridged machine.

You have to cut out a large pocket to make the ballscrew work on a G0704 saddle? I better go redo mine. I must have done something wrong ;-)

Would love to see some pictures of how you did it. Every 704 conversion I have seen required the saddle to be cut down as well as some serious grinding on the ball screw.

I think both machines are nice, but I like the added weight, thicker saddle, stronger column and larger Z axis on the G0795. Is it worth $400 more? Guess it depends on what your looking to spend.

I did have to grind the flange and do a little pocketing, just nothing that compromised its integrity.

That's what I said, "You have to cut a pocket into the saddle to get the ball screw to fit" Never said it compromised the integrity, just that it's one more step that you have to do to convert the 704 mill. I know a lot of people had issues doing this because they didn't have axes to a second milling machine and ended up having to break out a die grinder to remove the material. I'm just trying to point out that this is a step that you probably won't have to do with a CNC conversion on a G0795 due to the thicker saddle.
