How are you guys holding your work are vises good enough and should one look for in a work holding solution?
Vises work for most parts here. We use kurt vises and gerardi tombstones for the 4 axis stuff. You can also hold smaller fixtures in the vise if you're too lazy to take it off the table. ;)
We also use bigger fixtures, custom vacuum fixtures, bias-ply tape, and angle plates.
You really need to base your choice on what you 'plan' on running the most of. Thin flat parts generally require a fixture, where most other parts can be held in vise jaws. We typically use alum jaws so we can customize them to fit odd shaped parts.
We machine both castings and Hog-outs. Most castings required fixtures and build by Tool Makers.
Hog-outs usually on vises. Operators will make own fixture on CNC machine if needed.
