I am looking for available plans of a proven design of a large CNC mill to cut foam for scaled models of cars, boats, and jetskis. I need a working capacity of 8' X 4', and here's the most difficult part: at least 3' on the Z (yes feet). It would of course be helpful to have servo motor sizes and contoller setup designs as well.
If anyone has worked on such a project, input would be helpful also.

dont see any problem with a 3 foot z , it just makes the project more expensive
the best mods for the z would be round rails on support bar instead of just supported at the ends , and using split linear bearings on them , you would need to makke the z axis quite long on the fixed y axis because of the needed length and support needed ,
but it is quite feasable without problems , pity I live in the UK , a nice large project .

On the subject of large routers, does anyone here remember seeing a picture of a monster cnc router that in this particular picture it was carving a prototype (buck?) boat hull. The router seemed to be about as long and wide as a football field. Well not quite but almost. I seem to remember it as being in the US, that it had 4 or more axis. In the picture the product (in this case a boat hull) sat in a valley and the machine rails rode up on a higher section some +/-4m (12ft) above. I should have saved this link or picture and didn't. I've just finished going throught the more than one thousand photos here in the galleries and now it's "please help" time. Anyone got the link or photo?

I don't think this is what you are refering to but it seems to fit the bill nonetheless. I believe this cement structure will support the x axis...

In my highly uneducated opinion, I recon this design looks unstable. The Z axis is so long that I recon it would have to move even if it was twice as thick.

ynneb, Your right about that Z looking unstable, but I don't think its intended to do anything more than foam or wax.
