    Panel Meter for CNC

    Hi

I just purchased a NEW Simpson 523 0 - 15 Amp DC 4" panel meter ammeter on ebay. I just contacted the seller
and he mentioned that there is no shunt. Does anyone know if a Simpson amp meter has the shunt built into the main
housing. If not would it be difficult to locate one.

likely not; it just has the face scaled/marked.

u can test by putting current thru it: CAUTION!

98% PROBABILITY IT IS 1MA FULL SCALE W/O THE SHUNT

so use 1.5v battery with 1.5k ohm resistor in series on it an confirm. if was me, i would start w/ 15k or higher in case it is 0.1ma movement....

I think this is the data sheet at the link below.

It shows Iron-vane not moving coil, which usually indicates no shunt required.

Moving iron meter. No shunt required.
I have such ammeters on all drives: X, Y, Z and spindle.

    Cheers

To me it looks like it's only the AC-meters, that's Iron-vane, i would still try the 0.1mA road first.

Another method is to use the resistance range of a volt meter, resistance range result in a small current through the measured item, if you get a small deflection, pretty much points to moving coil that requires a shunt.
