    Joe's G0704 Conversion

    Here is my CNC Conversion.
    Travels are:
    X=19.5
    Y=12"
    Z=13"

    G540, 320oz motors With 2.8 mH low inductance (specifically spec'd for the G540), 50vdc

    I got Hoss DVD and using other examples made some modifications. (Highly Recommend it)

    Right now I have a 3" Column Spacer, Still need to Mill the Head Spacer's to take advantage of the 12" Y travel. I will let the G0704 make them, My CNC Mini MIll is not large enough.

    I did not do the Z-Slide Vertical Flip as of yet not sure If I will or not.
    I plan to get Another Saddle and make the one shot oiler in due time.
    Using two 50lbs Struts for counter balance.
    And need to make way covers for a large Y Travel, Then onto the Enclosure.

    A Quick Video Of machine running 200ipm I will take it higher when I get some free time to see what it will do. but realistically will not be cutting that fast.

    Thanks,
    Joe

    Nice work.

    I am a little suspicious of the 12" in Y. I have a feeling that once 1/2 the width of the carriage is off of its ways, stability and flex will be off the hook. I would think the weight of the vise alone would be enough.

    Put a dial indicator in the Z and run the table back and forth in Y and check how much the table tilts once it is unsupported.

    I will not be traveling more than 1/2 the saddle width. Most of my cutting will be done with fixtures. and if I use the vise I am limited to the 5-6" travel of the jaws of the vise. We will see how it works when I start cutting parts etc.
    Thanks,
    Joe

    Just a note on cutting thru the rear of the casting, when I did that on the old x2 base extension there was a noted difference in the distance between the dovetails where the cut was made. I measured it with a couple short pieces of ground drill rod in the dovetails.
    iirc there was .010 from front to back, had to put in a spreader bar to get it back even.
    Might not be as pronounced on the thicker g0704 base but still worth checking, if it needs spread a couple pins in your spacer could keep it true.

    Yes I had thought about that, and is why I have the Column spacer bolt to the outer portion of the Base on each side to help prevent movement or settlement of the base over time. I measured mine and it apeared to be fine, but time will tell.
    I do not plan on doing large hogging of material, and making light cuts mosly in aluminum etc.
    Thanks for the heads up. The casting is allot beefier than my X2 HF clone.

    What exactly did you use for the way cover. I did the same thing using a blackout shade.

    It is a PVC material from lowes it is used for a moisture barrier for tubs and showers, they can cut you a foot off I think it is 5' wide and 6.00 a foot.

    Okay. So what are you using it with? A roll up shade?

    Yes, I took the non spring loaded end off and cut it down to 10" wide then put the end back on the other side I took the rachet gear off the other side.
    Thanks,
    Joe

    Same thing I did. http://www.cnczone.com/forums/bencht...ml#post1195439 Only I used the shade as is.. I didn't re-wrap it with that moisture bearer stuff. You have a close up of the brackets and the way you mounted it ?

    To be honest. I don't have much time on it. And I ripped a hole in it. My vise is extended over the back of the table. Got too close to it. I want to get a new vise. On of those nice CNC style ones vs the one I have now. To fix the cover. I'll just unroll it some more and cut off the bad section.

    Both Pieces of my Head Spacer are complete. The Head is extended out 5" to take advantage of the 12" Y-Axis travel.
