    Hoss 5C 7x10

I've been doing some more upgrades to my little Grizzly 7x10 recently so I thought I'd make a thread.
I've had it for probably 10 years but didn't use it much at all until about 5 years ago (2010) when I decided to convert it to use 5C collets.
The first thought was to use it on my G0704 kinda like the tormach duality lathe so I started by stripping it apart and cutting down the bed to reduce the height to save some Z axis travel.

This is the start of converting the spindle head to use a 5C spindle from a spin indexer.

This is what I made for the collet closer back then, one of the things I'm upgrading this time.

A little more progress made a year later (2011), the arrival of the new G0704 sidetracked this project a bit.

About the last thing I did on this project in 2011 was to turn a 5C blank to fit a 4 inch Shars 3-jaw chuck.
The lathe fit on the G0704 quite nicely.

It worked pretty well as an attachment on the mill for some CNC turning. Made a simple bracket for the side of the head to hold the tool post.
I toyed with the idea of using the little rotary 4th axis as a tool turret mounted on the head, never got farther than pictured.

And now some of the newer upgrades.
I got a better quick change tool post, this 0XA from toolprecision on ebay, it's cheaper than from LMS.
New List Sale OXA Wedge Type Tool Post Set for 7" x 10 12 14 Hobby Lathe | eBay
I moved the post stud back about .75 to give more tool clearance.
I also replaced the middle gib screw in the compound slide with an M4 socket screw to be able to lock it.

Bought a full set of 5C collets for the lathe, 1/8 to 1 1/8 by 64ths, 65pcs from CDCO, very nice!
    CDCO Machinery Corp.
    I only had a 1/8ths set.
Plus I picked up their 72 hole rack for them.

As always, looks good. I'm loaning my CNC lathe to my local makerspace, but you've got me thinking about picking up a small 7" to stick on my PM45. Would be nice to be able to run the lathe as a lathe spindle or a 4th axis.

Yes it's nice, I'm contemplating making a nice bigger lathe attachment for the 0704 though the parts will likely just go towards a complete cnc lathe.
I still have the old lathe attachment I made many moons ago for the X2.

Finished up the Z powerfeed and it works very nice, much nicer than cranking that handle.

Man that is awesome! All of it... I found a harbor freight 7x10 today and picked it up for $100 in perfect working order, guy had it and never used it, still was covered in cosmo protectant.

The 5C spin indexer idea is excellent. I was just about to order the backing plate from LMS for the 4" 3 jaw chuck I use on the G0704 when I found this mini lathe section and decided to check it out. Now you have me all hot and bothered about doing the 5C spindle.

Do you have plans for that mod? And which spindle indexer is used? I saw the link to cdco above has one for $48 bucks. Hard to beat if it is the correct one, and I wanted to replace the bearings and go with a belt drive. AC Motor and VFD with spindle index feedback for threading.

What spindle bore do you have now through the 5C tube? I imagine the 4" chuck has a smaller through hole than the new spindle. Would your 5" G0602 3 jaw fit and what hole size does the 5" chuck have?

Awesome work! Hoss! I can see having alot of fun with this new small lathe and while it was nice running the G0704. Setup like a lathe, it will be nice having two machines ready to make parts without having to set them up for milling or turning operations.

Keep the cool stuff coming man can't get enough!

    Hoss,

Quick question being you have a g0704 and a mini Lathe, do you think the stock g0704 note and controller would be a good upgrade for the Lathe? I have my stocker and all of its components wrapped up in a box and i started wondering if it might be a bit stronger then the motor that came in the harbor freight mini lathe, anyways, just figured I'd ask the expert!

    Thanks Hoss!

    Re: Hoss 5C 7x10

yes i planned to do the same, the 704 motor is stronger and has good rpm so it could be geared down with a belt drive for more torque for steel cutting.

Awesome! Do you by chance remember what rpm the motor itself spins with the controller?

What do you think would be a good target max rpm would be? I will likely be using slower speeds for bigger 1.5 - 3" parts..
