Very sweet! How do you like the Chick? My HAAS rep sent a check sales rep here and I was damn well impressed with the design! I can see useful applications but not enough in my work to justify the price.

I did confirm that many people buy 6x1 bar stock (for the 6" vise) and throw them in a vise, machine countersunk through holes, and use them like normal 6061 soft jaws on top of a dedicated set of Chick 7075 jaws for jobs that aren't frequent enough for a dedicated $100? Set of Chick jaws.

Great design none the less. It sure would be nice not to have to clean chips out of each vise for 5 minutes before pulling them off the mill.

Nice set up. Thanks for sharing.

I do like the chick but I just got it and will have to use it before I pass further judgement. Only reason I got it is because someone fairly local was selling it for $300 and it's never been used. I figure I'll let it sit around for a just in case moment at that price. I've seen those chick's for over 1k

Hey Brian, don't EVER try to make your own soft jaws. Buy them from Monster-Jaws in Placentia. They're at 751 Monroe Way, Orangethorpe and the 57 FWY.

Last time I bought them, I got 12 sets for $120.00. You can't afford to make them for that price. There's $8.50 just in material. That leaves you $1.50 to do the machining (and Monster-Jaws are machined on all 6 sides). I hate to tell you Buddy, you might be fast, but you ain't that fast.

They are less that a mile from my shop Steve, and I buy all my jaws from them. I was talking about Chick jaws. Totally different and they don't make anything even close yet. The jaws are giant blocks like 6"x4"x1.5" or so and are EXPENSIVE, but bolting a solid block on top requires next to know work.

On a side note I pressed part of the word "monster jaws" which they engrave on the vice of their jaws into a whole bunch of powder coated finished calipers. Cost me $2500 in powder coating and stripping.

I use their steal jaws too. Good stuff!
Here was the set up that we ran thousands of calipers through. Just undercutting a relief in the bore then machine deburing with a single point engraving shaped tool.

nice! Looks like a job that is begging for some kind of fixture plate so you can load up your table with more than 4 calipers.

Not worth it. One time job with 14 different sizes. Since there are no non-powder coated surfaces to reference off of I also had to probe every single part

The Chik and Bock vices are good when low clamping forces are adequate. We have been through 2 speed, hydraulic and air over oil but the only vices we run now are the Kitagawa mechanical VQX vices the 200's have 7000kg clamping force. Basically triple the clamping force of the quick change light weight vices.

Newbie question here..... At some point, isn't your clamping force somewhat in-line with the liner power/force of the machine? Meaning if your clamp can hold 20K of force however at max your Tormach can only cut with a max of 10K lateral force, what's the point of spending that much more for a vise. Sort of like having a camera that can take a picture at 20 mega-pixel, however your printer is only a 300 dpi B/W..... Again, I'm a total newbie and trying to learn by asking the old salts on the board.

However, that being said..... I will be keeping my eyes out for one of the Chik One-Lok vises. Looks like it would meet any need I may have in the future. Has anyone had an issue with the Y travel on their Tormach 1100 running one of these?

    Later,
