    Bought my first mill.

Hi I just bought my first mill, a Fadal 3016 ht from 1997 with 4th axis and mp32 controller.
    It has some issues.
    1. Cts doesnt work.
    2. Missing 1 fork for tool magazine.
    3. Belt slips on low gear.

Does anyone know if its a real 4th axis or a indexer axis ?
Do I need to anchor it to the floor ?
Recommended cam for this machine with 4th axis ?
I use sw for cad and will mostly do aluminium work.
Recommended BT40 toolholders and where to buy in Europe.

It will arrive in about a week so I can try it out.

    Thanks all.

did the prev. owner just disconnect it cause it leaks? replace all the seals etc. big project and $$
    2. Missing 1 fork for tool magazine.
buy one from one of the online vendors they're cheap
    3. Belt slips on low gear.
replace motor mounts, replace belts, make sure belt is actually slipping not just making noise - read my posts about this issue. also, get over the denial that you don't need to do this maint. work and just do it.

you'd know. an indexer would have an indexer box, full 4th would have an amp and an axis card in the control cabinet
Do I need to anchor it to the floor ?
won't hurt, mine is anchored, and if you wanna run modern troichoidal toolpaths, do it to avoid walking
Recommended cam for this machine with 4th axis ?
good luck on this one.. no cam will 'just work' you will need help from a rep, or learn to write your own posts

use ER collet chucks, and the nicest drill chucks that you can afford for drills and taps (if u have rigid tap)

have fun! you have a lot to learn.

    Thanks all.

    Hi, thanks for your reply.
The cts is disconnected by previous owner, how big $$ will the parts be ?
Belt slips and smells on low gear, I did read your thread and will check when it arrives.
4th axis have a amp so it should be full 4th then.
    It has rigid tapping.
I will go over the machine ones it arrives and start to play with it.
Hopefully it will give me many joyful moments the coming years.

    Regards

Personally I would check or have a good electrician check all the transformer
taps to see if you are matched with tour shop power. I have read people right
off the bat wonder why a $2-3k spindle drive failed the first day

The 4th, Take a picture of it, anybody who owns a fadal should be able to
tell you rather quick if its a full fourth. First clue does the rotary have a fadal
    tag on it

The worn belts are cheap fixes, My first one, The shaft that held the hi/low
arms was worn down pretty good, I just made a new one and heat treated
the shaft. Have not had an issue for 15 years since I made the repair

The manuals are very clear how to operate to maintenance. If you dont have them
they are easy to find on the internet with some searching

I have never heard of a mp32 controller(maybe an upgrade)
Suggest posting pics of the problem areas, The guys here will fix you up quick
with advise, But your location may make it difficult to get parts

    Have Fun Good Luck

Yep 4th axis CAM is a SOB. FADAL went and did some oddball programming.

    Re: Bought my first mill.

I have now changed the belts and motor mounts, was easy and only took 2 days for delivery from the US.
Now it doesn't slip and I have tested it on both high and low gear milling some steel and alu without problems.
The 4th will have to wait for a while until I have played enough with the 3 axis that works.
I have been using "Delcam for Solidworks" and modded the post to fit me better and it works like its supposed to so far, will test the 4th axis post later.
I also replaced the lexan windows so I can see whats happening and bought Cimcool Cimperial 861 fluid.
    Thanks for your replies guys.

    Re: Bought my first mill.

    A little update.
I have now replaced the Belleville springs and the floater, only 1 spring was broken.
I have noticed that it undercuts during circular interpolation so I have to set the backlash and see if it corrects it.
I checked the backlash register and compared it to the factory setting sheet......they are the SAME ? ? ?
Starting to wonder if someone has just put in the numbers without measuring.
Will update how it goes when I am done fixing it and testing it out.
    Merry xmas to u all
