    Benchtop Grizzly Lathe - G0765

Looking to pull the trigger on purchasing one of these from Grizzly

    Grizzly.com

I need a small manual lathe for making small pins and dies for things like a snap/grommet press. Nothing to serious on the tolerance side of things. Just wanted to know what folks thoughts are on this class of lathe. I searched on the forum but could not find anything for this machine.

    Thanks for the reply

The mini lathe forum is full of these 7x lathes, check it out.

I have one, a 7x10 quite modified, they can be tweaked to handle a little steel cutting but are best suited for softer material like aluminum and plastic.

    Yep, been looking on there.

Now I'm considering this unit. More than I want to spend but looks like would be more suitable for a CNC upgrade down the road.

I'm getting ready to buy a Tormach PCNC1100 Series 3 setup and considered their Duality lathe but it looks to be pretty weak.

    Thanks for the feedback.

That's basically the same as the grizzly but with a better motor/controller and little readouts that you wouldn't need if you went to cnc.
The motor is better for cnc but the lathe itself is no better for cnc.
There are a lot of links on my site to other lathes and suppliers.

If your looking to save $$$$$$, why not the Harbor Fright version? The 7 X 10 version is $499.99 right now before any coupon you can find, generally there is a 20% or 25% one floating around some where. the 7 X 12 is $50 more.

After much searching the internet and youtube I have settled on this model from BigDogMetalWorks. Seems based on the youtube videos I saw to be built a little beefier than some of the other similar models.

Going to wait until after Thanksgiving to order it.

Purchased the Big Dog 7 x 14  It'll be in next week. I'll post up my first impressions when it comes in. Jeff at Big Dog Metal Works is super great to work with. Thanks Jeff for all the help.

Now, who has suggestions on a CNC kit for down the road.......

It seems like you'll need to make it yourself, but it doesn't appear to be too challenging. Congrats on the new toy
