    4x5 CNC Build

Well this has been a long time coming but I am finally starting this long overdue project. I just finished a Momus 2.1 build I am eager to get started on this larger more robust machine. I am using the Momus to cut out and mill some of the parts for this machine and its been great having the ability to do that. I actually built the Momus with this exact intention in mind, also it was a good learning experience all around into the world of CNC machines.
Everything is aluminum, either 80/20 or custom cut to my plans.
Below are a couple of concept pics as well as some of the parts made from the Momus. I have alot of parts on order and they should be arriving soon. In the meantime I got some aluminum today and started cutting out the basic pieces for the gantry and Z axis.
Im using all round linear rails and slides, fully supported. The gantry beam is a piece of 80/20 in the 3060 size. Using 80/20's deflection calculator I am well within the tolerances I want to be in. The other pieces will all be custom fabbed either using the Momus or just standard power and hand tools. Everything will basically bolt together, no welding.
I will post more when there is something more exciting to look at!!
    Here we go!!

Did you cut the aluminum plates with your Momus?
If it weren't for the last minute nothing would ever get done.

Yes. Took .020 per pass and 30ipm with a .125" end mill. I've seen better finishes but it's fine for this.

More progress albeit slow going. Trying to find time is hard these days.

More progress yesterday. I got the gantry and some more of the z axis mocked up. I'm using the Momus to mill the parts for me and it's working fantastically. Please excuse the messy shop, it's about time to do a total clean out again! Comments welcome. This is the router mount I made on the Momus. Works like a charm!! Took about two hours start to finish milling the parts tapping holes and assembling them all on the Z plate. This thing is going to be a beast!! Very happy with the results so far, very strong and sturdy. Attachment 231998Attachment 232000Attachment 232002Attachment 232004

Done for the day. I got a lot accomplished today and it's getting fun now! The Z axis is almost complete sans the drive assembly and the Y car is taking shape. I gave it a name just for kicks! Does anyone read these posts anymore??

Yeah. I'm reading it when I see a new post. It's normal that people don't complain when you're doing everything right.

Thanks C1, I really appreciate that. Truth be told though I've already messed up a couple of things on this build but I'm getting really good at hiding the evidence!!

That's a solid looking build! I'm planning on finishing my first build and milling out upgrade parts with the hope of getting great looking, functional results like yours. I'm truly impressed, jealous, and inspired by build.

Im trying to decide if I need any gear reduction on my Z axis. Im going to be using a 5 start screw. Do you guys think I would still want/need or benefit from a 2:1 or 3:1 reduction also? What would be the pros and cons?

    Re: 4x5 CNC Build

On both of my machines I use a 1/2-10 5 start ACME screw on the Z axis assembly. The big machine has a Hitachi M12VC router, the smaller machine has a Dewalt DWP611 router. There are DumpsterCNC anti-backlash nuts on both machines. There has been no issues with dropping down when power to the motors is removed and reapplied. When I change the big machine to an 11 pound Porter Cable 7518 3-1/4 hp router I plan to try back to back DumpsterCNC nuts on the screw to see if it handles the extra weight without backsliding with power off.

Some folks have used air springs with success.

Pros would probably be quicker acceleration.
    Cons would be lower speed.

I think that to benefit from a reduction, you need to use a smaller motor than can spin faster. Probably around 270oz.

Thanks for the input guys. Gerry, do you think a motor that size would do ok with the weight Im going to have? I havent weighed anything yet but the Z is going to be at least in the 15lb range I would think. Possibly more

It looks like the stock was smaller than the part, and the tool was just cutting air at the front there.

Yeah ya think? Lol actually the stock was plenty wide enough but in indexed it wrong on the machine bed and it ended up being to the left just a hair.

    Re: 4x5 CNC Build

Does anyone see a problem with the leadnut anchor point being at the top of the Z axis instead of somewhere towards the middle? It would be easier for me to access the leadnut for adjustments/service if it were at the top. Ive included a picture here of my Z plate, the part that actually moves up and down. I cant see where it would make a huge difference but just wanted to get some thoughts.
