Turnkey will help you getting ahead

At the METAV, CHIRON will present the new DZ 12K S MAGNUM five axis double-spindle machining center with a two-axis tilt rotary table for the two-spindle milling and turning of complex workpieces in one set-up.

(METAV 2010) At the METAV in Düsseldorf, Hall 16, Booth C 48, one can experience what CHIRON considers to be efficiency in complete machining. A new double-spindle center will be introduced with 2 x 5 axes, which impresses with its performance with regard to productivity and surface finish. Also, CHIRON will show its further-developed FZ 15 W MAGNUM machining center in mineral cast design, with its integrated workpiece changing system for loading/unloading during machining. The products of this Southern German machine builder are characterized by their productivity and special efficiency. Thanks to TURNKEY projects tailored to customer requirements, they make process sequences more reliable and ensure getting "Seconds ahead" once again.

The initiative for developing the DZ 12K S MAGNUM five axis came from CHIRON customers within the scope of turnkey projects, which demanded a compact solution, standing for top productivity with minimum floor space requirement, and, as an overall system, works reliably and energy-efficiently at top quality.

Dr. Dirk Prust, the Managing Director of Sales, Technology and Service of Chiron-Werke GmbH & Co KG, Tuttlingen: "The trend toward more complex series workpieces is clearly continuing and is therefore increasingly heading toward 5-axis machining. With 5-axis machining, higher precision is achievable, since reclamping isn't necessary, for example. To meet the productivity demands of such series workpieces, we have implemented these requirements in a cost-effective double-spindle machining center. After all, compared to the even more productive workpiece changing table variant from CHIRON, the investment for this new development is reduced thanks to fewer axes and clamping devices. Also, the new machine convinces with the proven advantages of CHIRON double-spindle centers, namely the lower floor space and personnel requirements, reduction of the cost per part by reducing the total machining time, and, compared to the single-spindle solution, double the productivity while saving up to 30% in energy costs at the same time."

Another feature of the new machining center is the reinforced tool taper to HSK-A 63, which will be available starting immediately for the entire CHIRON 12 series. The 2-axis tilt rotary table, developed and produced in-house, stands for high precision and extraordinary stability. In conjunction with the reinforced tool taper and the powerful spindle with a max. speed of 24 000 rpm, a top surface quality can be achieved. Furthermore, the rotary axes, driven by torque motors, allow simultaneous turning operations at 1000 rpm – ideal for complex complete machining. The X, Y and Z travel is 550, 400 and 360 mm, allowing sufficient room for positioning and machining complex workpieces made of steel, cast iron, aluminium or titanium. The axis accelerations are 10, 15 and 15 m/s², and the rapid feeds in all linear axes reach max. 75 m/min. The machine is also prepared for robot automation with the cost-effective standard module FlexCell Uno.

The further-developed FZ 15 W MAGNUM machining center is the second highlight at the METAV. With an enlarged work area and travels in X, Y and Z of 730, 400 and 425 mm and highly dynamic axes, the super-fast basket tool changer ensures max. productivity with very short chip-to-chip times (1.7 s). The integrated workpiece changing device guarantees an extremely high change precision and a considerable reduction in non-productive time thanks to the option of loading/unloading during machining - manually or with a flexible robot solution.

The swivelling device (4th axis), arranged freely in space, ensures an unhindered chip fall.

Integrated workpiece changing device and fast chip-to-chip times ensure reduced non-productive times.

All CHIRON machining centers introduced at the METAV are equipped with the new CHIRON FluidTower and LED signal technology. The FluidTower integrates the units for the machine room suctioning, hydraulics and spindle water cooling to save space, is ergonomic and service-friendly in one compact tower, which can be minimally removed from the machine at the set-up site for the purpose of vibration decoupling.

The new attractively designed LED signal light system ensures better visibility of the machine status display, and is also well-designed with increased functionality.

An energy efficiency package, with some standard and some optional solutions, provides energy savings/increased efficiency of the used CHIRON machining centres. Available components include:

- spindle and axis motors with reverse feeding
- energy-efficient transformers
- switchable airsensoring
- powersafe (targeted deactivation of secondary units during production breaks)
- frequency-controlled high-pressure pump
- cooling of aggregates
Energy efficiency is a major topic at CHIRON. Average energy consumption during non-productive times of 80% shows one thing: the highest savings potential can be found in the set-up times. Since the faster we produce, the higher the energy savings are. And CHIRON customers achieve this with turnkey projects. Thanks to the optimal tuning of all process-relevant parameters, such as the machine, device, tools, NC programming and automation, the customer achieves the best performance possible.

Today, many customers worldwide, from the automotive industry, aerospace industry, machine construction, watches and jewellery industry, as well as medical engineering, profit from the many years of experience of the CHIRON project engineers.

As a member of the VDW initiative "Blue Competence", CHIRON will present a corresponding turnkey solution based on an effectiveness comparison at the joint booth (Hall 16, Booth B9).
